Summer Enrichment Programs for Immigrants and U.S. Visitors will be offered again during Summer 2009 - the sixth year of this highly successful program!
Summer Enrichment Program classes are scheduled from 10:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, with special Explore Chicago field trips on Friday afternoons.
This year, the English Language Academy will once again offer this open-enrollment program in English as a second language. This special program is designed for students who are already in the United States or who may be visiting Chicago for a short time.
Because this program is non-intensive and non-academic, that is, offering only 15 class hours per week, we can accept students who hold a B-1 or B-2 visa, or those who have entered the United States on a visa waiver.
(The program is also open to students who hold an F-1 visa, and who may wish to enrich their summer break with additional study. Participation in this special program is voluntary and has no bearing on the immigration status of F-1 students. These students should understand that instruction in writing, grammar, academic discussion and TOEFL is not included. Students who wish to learn language for academic preparation should enroll in the ELA’s year-round intensive English program.)
Because of the special short-term nature of this program, Summer Enrichment students do not have access to DePaul University’s residence halls. Admission to this program does not meet full-time study requirements, and normally students admitted will not continue at the ELA in the fall.
As a student in the Summer Enrichment Program, you will study Monday through Friday, during the day. Your program will consist of the following four courses, or courses like these, for a total of 15 class hours per week:
*During previous summers, our Explore Chicago students have visited the John Hancock Tower, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Science and Industry, the Andersonville and Pilsen neighborhoods, the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio; and in the evenings attended a Chicago Symphony concert at the Ravinia Festival, a jazz performance at the Kingston Mines, and a Chicago White Sox baseball game.
The cost of the program is an all-inclusive $1,800 for the full seven week program. If you choose to enroll only in the first short program beginning on Monday, July 7, the cost is $900; and if you wish to join us as a new student in the second short program on Wednesday, July 29, the cost is $900.
Please apply soon, as space is limited. Applicants should know that this is a very popular program. In previous years, we had had to close enrollment in both short programs several weeks before their start dates and accept students only on a waiting-list basis.
