The English Language Academy offers several types of language courses for non-native speakers of English at DePaul University's Loop Campus. These courses and programs are described on the ELA web site.
DePaul's Intensive English Program (IEP) is our main and largest program and set of course offerings. The Intensive English Program offers language and academic preparation to students preparing for degree study, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. IEP students take courses in writing, reading, grammar, and spoken English/listening.
DePaul's TOEFL Intensive Program (TIP) is an academic preparation course focused on developing skills useful to students who are taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). TIP students take courses in TOEFL writing/grammar, reading, speaking and listening. They also take TOEFL iBT practice tests.
The ELA's elective courses are open-enrollment courses available both to students in DePaul's intensive English program and those taking electives only. Two of our most popular electives are the Pronunciation Workshop and TOEFL Preparation. The ELA also offers "ELA Topics" courses which change from term to term.
The ELA's special summer programs consist primarily of the Summer Enrichment Program offered in July and August. The Summer Enrichment Program is a language and culture course which is appropriate for immigrants and other individuals who are visiting the United States for a short time during the summer months.
Free classes are offered by the English Language Academy for four-week periods several times a year, mainly to U.S. immigrants and others who do not have time to take a full time language course. These classes are taught by student teachers in late afternoons, usually starting at 3:00. The classes are experiential and student-centered. They emphasize oral communication skills and are not intended to provide preparation for academic programs.
